First Dentist Visit

This past Wednesday was Max's first dentist appointment. I had my annual appointment and they booked Max to follow me. This was a great idea because he spent my appointment watching intently on everything the hygienist was doing. Of course he wouldn't speak to her, but after watching my appointment for 30 minutes he seemed to think she was safe and started to warm up to her.

Once my teeth were cleaned Max hopped in the chair, but on my lap. He was smiling the whole time. Then he showed the hygienist his teeth, but told her she couldn't clean them or touch them. He did allow her to count his teeth and that was fun for him. After the counting was over he told her that she could clean one tooth and he pointed to which one she could clean. He also decided that she could use her fancy tool, but no toothpaste. Wow! This was more than I thought he would allow so we were moving forward with the appointment. After that one tooth was cleaned he allowed her to clean a second tooth and pointed to which one she could clean. This went on through the fifth tooth and then he laid back allowing her to clean all of his teeth, but with no toothpaste.

Knowing how Max is with new people I was pretty impressed that he allowed her to clean all of his teeth and count them all. He did decline anything else she wanted to do, but I was OK with that. We got way farther into the appointment than I ever thought.

I did bring along Max's iPad so that he could play on it if he got bored during my appointment. I'm glad I brought it because it was the only way I got two pictures of this event. During the teeth cleaning I was attempting to get a picture secretly so that I wouldn't disturb what was going on. This is the best I could get.

Following the appointment Max picked out a new toothbrush, stickers and a fun toy from the tooth toy box. He carried his bag of goodies out to the car and couldn't wait until he could tell daddy all about his trip to the dentist. Later that night he asked me when we get to go again. Oh, I am so happy this experience was very positive.
